Made in Ply is a North Devon-based design workshop creating custom kitchens and made-to-measure furniture.

Founded by architect Dan and run alongside his wife Jo, the company brings together architectural thinking, practical organisation, and Dan’s love of clean lines, functional design, and minimal forms.

Husband & Wife Team

Made in Ply is a family-run business founded by husband-and-wife team, Dan and Jo. Dan leads the design side, working closely with clients to create kitchens that are both beautiful and practical. Jo is usually the first person you'll hear from, helping guide projects from initial enquiry through to completion.

We deliberately remain a small company, taking on a select number of projects each year so we can provide the level of service our clients value. Today, our kitchens can be found in homes across the UK, from compact apartments to commercial premises, large family homes to self-build projects.

Daniel Lobato

Daniel Lobato is an architect and designer with international experience at leading practices, including Foster & Partners in London and Nation Viney in Sydney, before establishing his own design practice in Devon, UK.

Today, Daniel leads Made in Ply, bringing together architectural thinking and hands-on design to create bespoke kitchens and custom furniture. His work is rooted in intelligent space planning, clarity of form, and a strong focus on function.

With a particular love of clean lines, minimal composition, and natural materials, Daniel approaches every project with a balance of precision and restraint. His background in architecture ensures each design is considered not just for how it looks, but how it works in everyday life.

Known for his uncompromising attention to detail, he continues to oversee the design of every project, creating highly tailored spaces that are both refined and practical, and built to last.

Humble beginnings...

How it all began

It started, as many good things do, with a problem to solve.

Architect Dan needed a desk for his own space and decided to design one himself. One project led to another, and what began as a personal solution soon developed into a deeper exploration of custom design, craftsmanship, and space-making. That process became Made in Ply.

What followed was a natural evolution - from custom furniture into fully considered kitchens - shaped by the same principles of clarity, function, and simplicity.

Alongside him is Jo, the organiser-in-chief and steady hand behind the studio. She is often the first point of contact, keeping projects moving smoothly, coordinating schedules, and ensuring ideas are translated into clear, deliverable outcomes. She also plays a key role in how the work is presented, helping to communicate each project with the same care it is designed with.

From humble beginnings in a basement office, Dan and Jo now run Made in Ply from their workshop in North Devon. Supported by a small, skilled team, they design and manufacture custom kitchens and furniture, delivering carefully crafted spaces to homes across the UK.
